Resale maths
Resale profit calculator: what to count
“Bought for £10, sold for £25, made £15” is almost never true. Here's how VERNTIC works out net profit on every deal, so you can do the same sums yourself.
The costs
- Buy price (from the exact source listing)
- Marketplace selling fee (percentage and any fixed per-order fee)
- Payment-processing fee, where the platform charges one separately
- Shipping to you and shipping to the buyer, plus packaging
- VAT (if you're registered) and import duty/VAT for goods from abroad
- Currency-conversion cost for non-GBP purchases
- A returns/refund allowance
The formulas
| Net profit | Sell price − buy price − all costs above |
| Margin | Net profit ÷ sell price |
| ROI | Net profit ÷ total money spent |
| Break-even sell price | The sell price at which net profit is £0 |
| Max buy price | The most you can pay and still hit your target profit |
Unknown is not zero
If a listing doesn't state shipping, the honest answer is “unknown”. VERNTIC keeps those costs out of the total but lists them clearly under the result, so you know the figure is optimistic until you fill them in. On any deal page you can edit shipping, VAT, duty, returns and other costs, and the numbers update instantly.
Worked example
Buy £10.00, sell on eBay for £25.00. With a fee of roughly 12.8% plus 30p, eBay takes about £3.50, leaving £11.50 before postage. Add £3.20 postage and £0.50 packaging and you keep about £7.80 — roughly half the “£15” headline. Fee rates are examples from our current schedule; check eBay's own fee page before relying on them.
